Come play in my world for awhile!

The World Cup is half-full

Abby and Emily are playing their first season of soccer, and they are adorable to watch. Their youthful excitement and puppy-like enthusiasm for the game is contagious to players and spectators alike.

Unfortunately, the weather has been abysmal this year. We've had rain, cold weather, rain, rain... and did I mention rain? We've also been running around between Miami and D.C. for the last few weeks and missed a few games. As a result the season is well underway, and yet they haven't actually played that many games.

As with most children embarking upon their first season of a sport Abby and Emily's enthusiasm considerably outweighs their skill. On the way to Saturday's game we had the following conversation:

Abby: Our team ROCKS! We have got the best soccer team ever!

Emily: YEAH!!

Abby: We haven't been beaten yet. We're gonna do great today! We are sooo gonna win!

Emily: YEAH! (pumping fist)

Hannah: Whoa... I didn't realize your team was that good. How many games have you guys won now anyway?

Abby: Mom? Is this our first game or our second?

Hannah: (snorts)

Mom: (Sending Hannah my evil mommy eyes via the rear view mirror and defying her to comment on Abby's sweet, yet unfounded, confidence).

Ummm... You'd have to ask daddy, but I know your team is going to do really well today.

Emily: YEAH!!

Hannah: (wisely letting it go with an eye roll)

And for the record? They won...

In spite of the goal they scored on themselves.

I could use a little of that enthusiasm over here. RAIN! Rain and more rain. Rain til Tuesday. We have the greenest and longest grass in the hood. Good job girls, you ROCK....don't listen too much to Hannah she's just jealous LOL

I love it.

I very clearly remember when a girl my basketball team scored two points - against us in 5th grade.

My kids definately suffer from over-inflated ego when it comes to sports! I try to reign them in a bit, but I guess confidence is half the battle. popping in from sits!

I love that youthful confidence. I wish we could bottle some.

I LOVE watching the wee ones play soccer - just sort of collectively running after the ball from one end of the field to the other.

My eldest was what we lovingly referred to as a 'flower picker'. She'd stop in the middle of said run to pick a dandelion or fix her hair or watch a car go by. Why yes, she was later diagnosed with ADD, what makes you ask?

Sounds like that winning season is off to a great start!

Kids love their sport don't they?

I remember excitedly putting on my football boots and running out to play when I was young, then sport became more a chore as each year went by.

But if they keep winning, it will never be a chore.

That's hilarious. When I was in middle school, I was on the first girl's travelling soccer team. We went around Pittsburgh and played other townships. I'm not sure we actually won any games. I remember the first time we actually scored a goal. It was well into the season. We went nuts and I am pretty sure the game stopped for a few minutes. I completly understand where they are coming from.

That part is so much fun. Of course in my house that lasts for about 3.7 weeks and then it's followed by "Do I haaaaaave to Mo-om!"

I scored for the other team when I was in 4th grade, playing basketball... I had no idea for a few seconds, and was doing a crazee celebration dance and patting myself on the block. Until that mean old kid had to tell me, "You scored for the wrong team!" Totally peed in my happy cheerios..Jerk.

By the way, soccer sounds like good fun. Hope the girls keep enjoying it! :)

That is cute and funny all at the same time. I love kids and sports. I asked Poonch if she wanted to play softball this summer (she never has before) and she said, "sure, if I get a trophy." Ummm, hello, they don't just hand those things out! Oh wait, yes they do.

Hello Anon Mom!

Scoring for the other team and STILL leading your own to victory? Talent. Sheer talent.

So, so adorable! I love little kid sports leagues. My 7 year old played basketball for the first time this past winter and it was so cute watching the kids running up and down the court, trying to remember what they needed to do. Each time my son made a basket, he felt it important to add extra numbers to the points he scored. He was, by all accounts, the league MVP when the season ended!

Gotta love when they score in the wrong goal. It's too funny and oh so cute!!

The Hubby SWEARS we are not going to let Reagan play soccer just because he doesn't want to have to stand in the rain and cold to watch her games!

I played soccer when I was about 10, and we lost every single game. In fact, I scored the only goal our team ever made, in the LAST game.

It's all in the attitude!

When my son play soccer he tries to get the ball away from his own teammates! He is 7 and doesn't quite get it yet!

Aww! I think it's wonderful they're not jaded and bitter.

I just love the way that you tell things. It is exactally how I would be thinking about it. I noticed that you have an Abby and an Emily. I guess I have not seen the names after all of these months. I think that it is funny that I have an Abby and an Emma. Great minds think alike I guess. It is nice that they got to play and win this week. Here is to many more wins and graceful losses.

My oldest daughter played indoor soccer one year. It was hysterical to see her skipping around the field and pretty much ignoring the ball or other players. Good thing they didn't keep score.

we had that whole kicked into the wrong goal, celebrate and then realize uh-oh!

Here is what I remember about soccer with my children:

Bring big blankets to cover the whole backseat because they were covered with mud from head to toe. (Plus I was the mom that picked up and took home half the team!)

Their excitement was always contagious and I loved every second of it......win or lose a game, we were always winners!

My four played it. In fact my youngest grew up more in the car than out because of his 3 sister's practices and games.

You go Soccer girls!

The only sport Sassy is into is swimming. (oh & cheerleading- does that even count?)

Good call on that response. Smart mommy.

I'm so jealous of their enthusiasm! Suvi gets dragged to soccer every week practically kicking and screaming. Then she has a great time while there. Sigh.

Fun!! I love watching them play soccer. Over here at that age the teams don't 'officially' keep score, but the kids always know who wins!
