Finish-up Friday

I'm still lurking in sunny Florida. There have been quite a few questions in the comments to which I normally would have replied. But between nursing my sunburn, lying around like a slug, watching the sharks, herding turtles kids, and driving all over the eternally freakin' endless beautiful state of Florida I haven't quite gotten around to it.

Sunburn - It's gone and all is right with the world. Fortunately, when I burn it usually just turns to tan over the next day or so. My face peeled slightly, but otherwise I'm good as new. Thanks for all your thoughtful remedies :)

Sharks - They're gone! We saw them at Carlin Beach in Jupiter, FL. Several people asked why the sharks were there in the first place and, well, no one knows. Yes, they were chasing fish, but scientists don't know what caused them to come so close to shore. Usually they stay much farther out, and the fact that the sharks were literally within a few feet of the beach baffles everyone.
.
KathyB!- Watching the sharks was truly one of the most amazing things I've seen. Maybe even life changing? The next day we drove to Miami, which was shark-free. No one wanted to go more than knee-deep into the water, and the kids kept asking if there were sharks. What can you say?! I told them the truth. Of course there are sharks, but they're back out in the deep water where they're supposed to be. I think. Every shadow was suddenly ominous, and sandcastle building suddenly trumped body surfing. Quite a few commenters said that they'd never stick a toe in the ocean again. I'm not sure where I fall on that spectrum yet, but I do know my view of the ocean has been permanently altered. I definitely don't think I'll surf again...

Blog - I should be back to my regular schedule of posting on Monday. I've missed checking your blogs, and I'm looking forward to coming home and getting caught up.

I'll leave you with a couple beach pictures. These pictures were taken the day before the sharks invaded at the beach where we watched them. I try not to think that I was swimming in an area that was infested with sharks 12 hours later.
.
I love to body surf. I'm usually pretty good at avoiding physical humiliation, but every once in awhile something goes awry....

That black blob floating in the water? I got rolled. It's either my head or the bottom of my bathing suit bobbing in the surf... In the world according to me a person would never get pummeled by a wave and lose the bottom of their suit. I guess the boundaries of my empire don't extend into Florida. Good to know.

I'm jealous.

I want to be at the beach.

We're supposed to get SNOW later. SNOW. In the Spring? Hmph.

So jealous! I spent many many weeks (and summer months!) in my teenage years at my aunt place in Melbourne, FL. Unfortunately, for some strange reason she decided to sell her block-from-the-beach house and move back to Middle Of Nowhere, NC....so my FL beach house is no more. :( Sounds like you've had a great vacation! Glad the sunburn has healed up nicely and the sharks have gone back to the depths of the ocean where they belong!

You have to add an email to your comments, so many times you've cracked me up or at least made me smile and all I have is the dreaded NO REPLY BLOGGER :(

You sound like you are having such a good time!! Watching the sharks must have been really neat. I know my two Princes would have loved that.

Kathy B!, get home soon...reading your shark blog is making me nervous. There has to be at least 40 shark shadows in that little pic from your last post.

You know, there's something to be said for hotel pools. Maybe I'm just under the influence of too many Shark Week documentaries, but I think I'll stick to one of the Great Lakes for a beach experience from now on.

Be safe. Can't wait to hear your drive home stories!

Swimming with sharks. Huh. Maybe The World According to [You] should get a show on Animal Planet or something.

Glad your trip has been good.

I'm very jealous - lovely photos.

Oh good GAH, I think I'd have nightmares knowing I was swimming around right where sharks were found circling a short time later.

On the other hand, maybe the sharks WERE there already, and you have a built in shark repellant? The flash of white that accompanies the loss of swimsuit bottoms, perhaps? That would come in handy!

Wouldn't that be an awesome story if you did get eaten by a shark?

Anonymous said...

So where able to retrieve your bottoms? I read that righ, right?

Kristina said...

haha! Don't worry, that happens to everyone who dares the ocean at least once. I swear the waves think it's funny. It happens to me too often, but maybe because I like to mess with the big waves. :)

That looks amazing! I'm glad your sunburn is gone and I'm glad you didn't get eaten by one of the sharks!

I wish I was there. I love Florida and the beach. Enjoy every minute. Here in Utah it is snowing... Yuck.

Wow, those are some great waves. Not as peaceful as the calm water you see around here. Much more exciting.

And I hadn't considered the effect seeing sharks so close may have on the little ones. But it will be a great story for them to tell when they get back to school.

Sitting here in NY I am 100% jealous of your beach shots. I am freezing today and it is not supposed to be warmer then 45 degrees today! I will live through you for now. It sounds like you had a great time on your not quite a vacation vacation! Hope to see you at www.askbecca.com soon!

ok, truth be told, I haven't liked the ocean since I saw Jaws over twenty years ago. Yup, it scared me that much.

I love the ocean but I've always been afraid of the shark factor. I tend to not go out beyond the point where I can see my feet. I'm wimpy like that. I'm usually too busy hunting for shells anyhow.

You are a daredevil. I so respect you.

Outstanding! Love that you tried the body surfing. I hope to try surfing - I think I'll make a bucket list and add that.

I get nervous in a LAKE just thinking about sharks. Don't get eaten. Or else.

See ya Monday! :)

Looks like a good time, but I hear ya, the ocean is so mysterious... we forget that too often.

I want to be at the beach...sharks or no sharks...I'm up for the beach anytime!! Although that is still a little freaky that the sharks were so close to the shore...if we were there, that would have been a total "I told you so" from my husband. He always says you never where sharks will show up and I laugh at him. If we had been there he would have just given me that look he gives me when he knows he's right about something.

Glad to hear the sunburn is healing. I always tan a day or two later but the initial sunburn...ouch!!!

Have a safe trip home ... I grew up swimming in the ocean, lived at the beach. My kids are growing up land locked and it is interesting to me because I took the ocean for granted!

Welcome Back Kathy and family. Sounds like the vacation was very relaxing (aside from the sharks).

Enjoy the excitement you can cause by losing the bottom of your suit while you can!

At my age, no one would care......

Anonymous said...

I would have lost it w/ shark sightings!!! No way! Wouldn't get me back in that water!

Sunburns are the worst.

LadyFi said...

Never body surf wearing a bikini - you always end up losing a piece or two...

As for the sharks, perhaps the glow of your sunburn scared them off?!

Stacy Uncorked said...

You tan like I do... :) Holy moly that was a LOT of sharks! I'd be a little nervous about going out in the water, too - especially if I got 'rolled' and lost the bottoms of my bathing suit! LOL! ;) Sounds like you are having a wonderful time sans sharks - looking forward to your posts this week! ;)

Kathy B! body surfs? I am now certain there is nothing that you cannot do.

However, is this really you in this photo? I think I need a close-up in order to confirm.
